What information should I send for a forging quote?
For the most accurate quotation, provide a technical drawing or 3D model, material specification, required quantity, dimensions and tolerances, heat-treatment requirements, machining scope, inspection requirements and applicable industry standards.
Information about the component’s operating loads, temperature, fatigue requirements and service environment is also useful when the forging route has not yet been fully defined.
STEP, STP and PDF files are commonly used. When some requirements are still under development, send what you have and our engineers will help identify the remaining information.
What forging methods can ALTAMET support?
ALTAMET can support several forging routes depending on component size, geometry, alloy, quantity and mechanical requirements.
Typical options include closed-die forging, open-die forging, seamless rolled-ring forging, etc. Specialized routes such as precision or isothermal forging may also be evaluated for suitable applications.
The final process is selected after reviewing the drawing, alloy, loading conditions, production volume and quality requirements.
Can ALTAMET help determine whether my part should be forged?
Yes. We can review the component geometry, operating loads, alloy, fatigue requirements, quantity, machining scope and inspection requirements to determine whether forging is the appropriate manufacturing route.
Where another process such as casting, machining or metal additive manufacturing is more suitable, we can evaluate those alternatives as well.
What is the difference between open-die and closed-die forging?
Open-die forging shapes the workpiece between dies that do not completely enclose the material. It is commonly used for simpler shapes, larger parts, low production quantities and components such as shafts, disks, blocks, sleeves and rings.
Closed-die forging forms the material inside shaped die impressions. It is generally better suited to more defined geometries, improved repeatability and medium- or higher-volume production.
The best method depends on geometry, size, alloy, tooling economics, quantity and performance requirements.
Can forged parts be supplied fully machined?
Yes. ALTAMET can supply proof-machined, rough-machined or completely finish-machined forgings.
Machining may include datums, mounting surfaces, bearing seats, bores, sealing surfaces, threads, holes, splines and other precision features. Inspection can be performed after forging, after heat treatment, during machining and on the completed component.
Do you support both prototypes and production forgings?
Yes. ALTAMET supports projects from initial samples and first-article development to repeat and serial production.
Can ALTAMET provide inspection reports and documentation?
Depending on project requirements, ALTAMET can support material certificates, heat-treatment records, dimensional inspection, mechanical testing, hardness testing, ultrasonic inspection, magnetic-particle inspection, penetrant inspection, metallographic examination, first-article inspection and full traceability documentation.
Required inspection methods, acceptance criteria and documentation should be defined before production begins.
